A new lumbar support seating system designed for underground mine staff working loaders and haul trucks has resulted in decreased injuries and fatigue.
Perth-based Modern Motor Trimmers (MMT), which concentrates in suspension seats and seating products for the mining company, has spent more than five years enhancing the pneumatically-operated twin air lumbar support.
The 2 stage lumbar system is integrated into the backrest of an ISRI premium-quality T-backed seat. It makes use of the air supply from the seat's built-in air compressor or the machine's air supply to completely inflate, supporting the operator's lumbar region and creating a buffer towards shock and jarring.
MMT is setting up the lumbar system in the premium quality ISRI 150kg-rated seating range, currently the only product available on the market to have an adjustable back rest which is often angled for increased operator comfort and support.
Managing Director Garry Spouge, who founded MMT in 1992, said the firm had improved and started to give the innovative seating product in ISRI seats in the last 1 year, as demand for safer and more relaxing seating technology in the underground mining sector had grown.
"Safety is the number one concern for all mining firms around Aussie outback, and that obviously includes employee protection and wellbeing, which was the starting point for us in terms of building up this lumbar support system," Mr Spouge said.
"Sore and uncertain backs are probably the most common factors for lost time injuries in the company, and our lower back support targets the lumbar region, preventing back injuries and ultimately on-the-job exhaustion."
Mr Spouge stated that MMT had already researched and designed a similar
T backrest for underground mining equipment, but the prototype didn't have an adjustable lumbar support.
"We developed the initial prototype in the middle of 1990's, but the patented system we're currently using is suited to an ISRI seat which has built-in adjustable suspension dampening to gradual the seat suspension down, while a seat isolator decreases the forward and back jarring," he said.
"This seat was also chosen as it's the only one in manufacturing to our skills that reclines. Some other manufactures have tried to initiate the 'T' back rests, but their seats are non-reclining which causes a problem when operators need to adjust it for ease
"We're really grateful with our current design, and already the feedback we've gained has been incredibly positive, and especially, that it's reducing accidents and exhaustion."
Mr Spouge states that as well as increasing operator convenience and safety, the lumbar support as well helps to improve seat life by reducing wear and tear and supporting appropriate posture.
"Thus, the benefits are huge, both for the operator along with the employer," he added.
MMT's core market niche is the supply, installation and servicing of premium suspension seats and also seating items to the WA mining, building, construction, engineering and transport sectors.
